Description
The TCRT5000 Line Tracking Sensor Module is an infrared reflective sensor module commonly used in robotics and smart car projects for line-following applications. It detects differences between black and white surfaces by measuring reflected infrared light.
This module is widely used in:
-
Line-following robots
-
Obstacle and edge detection systems
-
Path tracking intelligent cars
-
Automation and DIY robotics projects

4. Pin Configuration
| Pin | Description |
|---|---|
| VCC | 3.3V – 5V power supply |
| GND | Ground |
| DO | Digital Output |
5. Working Principle
The module works on infrared reflection:
-
The IR LED emits infrared light.
-
When placed over a white surface, most of the IR light is reflected back to the phototransistor → output changes state.
-
When placed over a black surface, most of the IR light is absorbed → little reflection → output changes state.
The onboard LM393 comparator compares the signal with an adjustable reference voltage set by the potentiometer and outputs a clean digital signal.
6. Output Behavior
| Surface | DO Output |
|---|---|
| White Surface | LOW (typically) |
| Black Surface | HIGH (typically) |
(Note: Output logic may vary slightly depending on adjustment.)
7. Applications
-
Line-following robot cars
-
Edge detection (cliff detection robots)
-
Conveyor belt tracking
-
Position detection systems
-
